Who can take part?
We welcome heads of department joining this community at anytime during the academic year.
The project is for secondary heads of department/subject leaders, and is open to heads of department in schools already involved with Maths Hubs and to those who are not yet involved.
In their first year of engagement with this project, participants will be part of a Work Group. In subsequent years they will be part of a Maths Hub-led subject leadership community.
What is involved?
New and Aspiring Heads of Maths Work Group starts in Bristol on 15 January 2025!
This is a Work Group for local Mathematics teachers who want to develop their skills and knowledge of leading a mathematics faculty. This project provides an opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of teaching approaches, of their wider roles, and of their capacity with their colleagues to transform secondary maths learning.
They will work collaboratively with other subject leaders, discuss developments and engage with research, and use this experience to inform their work in leading and developing maths education in school.
The sessions spread across the academic year (two days face-to-face, two twilight online) will reflect current issues and the priorities of participants.
What will you learn?
Amongst other outcomes, participants will:
-
Be able to support high levels of attainment in maths.
-
Promote and develop a shared vision, culture and set of principles for teaching and learning in maths
-
Develop a coherent and ambitious action plan focused on improving outcomes for students and the needs of teachers
-
Develop collaborative ways of working within the department to support ongoing developments
-
Develop their own expertise in planning and leading effective professional development with their department.
-
Have a clear understanding of the leadership and management skills required to enable them to effectively promote and develop principled teaching approaches within their own departments
-
Have their thinking constructively challenged and develop new ideas, including through critical engagement with research and other literature
-
Develop as leaders through collaboration to become a learning community.
-
Discuss the big current issues in mathematics education locally and nationally.
What is the cost?
The Secondary Maths Subject Leaders Community project is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
