On Wednesday 28 January, around 200 teachers and leaders gathered at Taunton Racecourse for the Boolean Maths Hub conference Everyone Counts: Creating Maths Classrooms Where Equity and Resilience Add Up for All Learners. From Early Years to Post-16, the day brought together practitioners from across the Boolean region with a shared focus on improving maths experiences for all learners.
The conference opened with a welcome that grounded the day in a shared purpose. Delegates were invited to think about the beliefs that sit behind maths teaching — beliefs about who maths is for, who feels confident, and who may quietly decide that maths “isn’t for them”. With a strong emphasis on the diversity of the Boolean region and the challenges and strengths within it, the message was clear: equity and resilience aren’t add-ons, they are central to improving attainment for everyone.
Across three workshop sessions, participants chose from a wide range of sessions — and many commented that choosing was the hardest part. Workshops explored themes including mathematical resilience, oracy, SEND, early number, mastery and learner confidence, with sessions such as:
- From ‘I Can’t’ to ‘I Can’
- Embedding Oracy in a Whole-School Maths Strategy
- Meeting the Needs of Students with SEND
- Play, Explore, Discover: Early Years Maths in Action
Just before lunch, the keynote brought everyone together to focus on maths anxiety and resilience, challenging common assumptions about struggle and highlighting how confidence grows when challenge is supported, normalised and worthwhile.
Feedback from the day reflected the balance between thinking deeply and leaving with practical ideas:
“Lots of ideas I can take straight back to the classroom.”
“Thought-provoking and genuinely useful.”
“A really good balance of research and practical strategies.”
“Great to talk to other teachers about maths.”
Delegates also valued the opportunity to connect with colleagues, visit exhibitors and take time away from the pace of everyday school life to reflect on practice.
By the end of the day, many participants left with new perspectives, practical next steps and a renewed sense of collective purpose — exactly what the conference set out to achieve.
